A Man And His Thoughts
It is a sad fact about our culture that a poet can earn much more money writing or talking about his art than he can by practicing it.
-W. H. Auden
Poetry and creative writing do not receive much attention in today’s society. I saw this man typing away at his typewriter as I was walking down the heart of the Haight-Ashbury. I was surprised by the way he concentrated on creating poetry, especially at the corner of a busy intersection filled with a combination of tourists and hippies. His focus and poise convinced me that he was really passionate and proud of his work. To see someone enjoy using an obscure yet unique talent to earn money was truly humbling.
